To determine how much fertilizer, seed, weed control, insect control or top soil you need, multiply the length of your lawn by its width. This equals your total square footage. Deduct any non-lawn areas (house, gardens, etc.)
_____ Length (feet) X _____ Width (feet) = _____ Total Sq.feet. (-)Subtact Non-lawn area ____ = Total Sq. foot coverage you need.
To determine how much much is required to apply to an existing bed, get a ruler and check the depth in several areas around the bed. Measure up from where you hit the soil. A good depth to have is about three (3) inches. This keeps the weeds under control.
Take the square footage (see above) and multiply by the depth. (Convert to a decimal in feet) Example: 3" (inches) depth; 3/12 = .25' (feet). Then divide by 27.
How many cubic feet in a cubic yard you ask? For example in a 12' x 10' bed there is 120 sq. ft. (12 x 10 = 120). Then take 120 sq. ft. x .25 (the 3" depth). This equals 30 cu. ft. / 27 = 1.11 cu. yards.
