Best Feeds Garden Centers - Home of the 5-Year Tree Guarantee.

At Best Feeds we understand today's economic environment and we work to give you the most value for your garden center dollar.  To help you extend that value, we have partnered with MYKE Growth Supplement Products to offer you a 5 Year Guarantee on all shrubs and trees purchased at our garden centers and planted with MYKE Tree & Shrub Supplement.  What is MYKE?  It is a 100% natural, beneficial microscopic fungi that associates itself with the feeder roots of plants to create a network of filaments in the soil, transporting water and nutrients to the roots.  This is a symbiotic relationship - both organisms benefit.  This fungus-plant alliance accelerates root development and stimulates plant growth. MYKE is easy to use and safe for the environment.

The plan is simple... work with you Best Feeds consultant to select a tree or shrub right for your growing conditions, follow our planting instructions, water, fertilize and watch it grow!  Be sure to save your original proof of purchase.  See use for more details and the planting guide.

Thinking about a home orchard?

By Lisa Sutterllin

Fresh from the grower, our fruit trees, grapes and berries have arrived ready for Spring planting.  Shop now for the best selection.  We have several varieties new this year including the 4 in 1 Fruit Cocktail Tree, comprised of a peach, pear, nectarine and plum.  All on one tree!  We also feature the Pear Cocktail with 3 varieties; Bartlett, Keiffer, and Moon on one tree.  There is also the combination apple; Gala, Fuji, and Yellow Delicious all on one tree.  All combination trees are self-pollinating, so you only need to plant one.

Not enough room for an orchard?  Choose the patio peach tree.  Grown for its small stature, this tree produces medium sized fruit and is relatively easy to care for.  Available in two varieties, this peach will surely be a hit with any gardener.

Don’t forget to put blueberries on the menu!  One of nature’s perfect fruit, the blueberry is packed with goodness including vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants.  Blueberries thrive in acidic soil which fits perfectly in Western Pennsylvania.  Not only do blueberry plants feed you, but they serve as a very eye appealing shrub in the landscape.  Noted for its Fall colors of orange and red, the blueberry bush is the plant that keeps on giving, long after harvest.  Keep in mind, for the most bountiful yield, plant two or more varieties of blueberries together.

We also have red, green, purple, and seedless grapes.  Plus, blackberries, red raspberries, gold raspberries, strawberries and cranberries.  Have your own produce department in your backyard!

Just a few of the fruit trees currently in stock are listed below.

Apple trees can grow to a height of 30 feet and a width of 15 feet with a growth of 8 to 12 feet per year. They require rich soil, moderate watering, good drainage and full sun. When planting, space trees according to their ultimate size. To prevent corrective pruning later on, frequent light pruning during the tree's early years is required. It is recommended to prune mature trees to allow new growth and to permit sunlight to reach into the tree to discourage mildew. Scab is the most troublesome disease that affects apple trees. Fire blight, apple rust disease, black rot, and bitter rot can all be a problem as well as the following insect pests: aphids, red mite, flat-headed apple-tree borer, friot-tree bark beetle, codling moth, and apple maggots.
Important Info : Do not plant in low areas where frost settles or where apple trees have previously been planted.

Hudson Cherry is named for the Hudson Valley, New York, an important fruit producing area of the State. This sweet cherry was introduced in 1964 as a special type that could be useful in extending the normal sweet cherry season. It ripens about 10 days later than 'Lambert' which is one of the latest ripening commercially important variety. Fruits are dark red in color, darker than 'Windsor' though not fully black. The fruits are medium to large in size, sometimes just under an inch in width. Trees of 'Hudson' are very vigorous, growing more rapidly than most other varieties. 'Hudson' originated from a cross made in 1925 between 'Oswego' and 'Giant' and was introduced in 1964

'Seckel Pear'  A must for the home orchard. Hardy and self-fertile. Hardiest bloom in the spring. Resistant to fire blight; it's reported that if any trees survive, Seckels do. Fruit small, reddish-brown russet over yellow or greenish-brown. Best flavor. Flesh creamy white and sweet. Good for preserving, spicing. Thinning produces better size fruit. Tree is naturally semi-dwarf.  Seckel pears are an old European variety. They have been growing in North American since the 1800s.
