As gardeners, we have a responsibility to learn how to water wisely and conserve moisture once it gets into the soil. No matter what the soil type, organic matter will improve the soils ability to retain moisture. Jolly Gardener Soil Conditioner will improve the soil by improving the soil's ability to hold water. Keep in mind that once the soil condition is improved, you will need to apply more water, not less to water to a deeper depth. On the plus side, you will be able to go longer between watering.
So to conserve water: mulch, mulch, mulch and mulch some more! Mulching can help retain up to 1/3 of the water used in the garden. It will help keep roots cool and hold down weeds (your garden's biggest competitor for moisture)
WATCH FOR SIGNS OF STRESS
A plant that gets a little too hot during the day or is in need of a little water will wilt during the day, but once watered will look normal. Water stressed plants however will have leaves smaller than normal or have brown edges around leaves. Flowers or fruit may drop from plant or be of less quality than normal. (This is the cause of conditions such as blossom end rot) Regular, deep watering will correct this condition.
WHEN TO WATER
Water in the morning or evening, but never during the heat of the day as the water is wasted due to evaporation. If possible, watering in the morning is best to protect plants that are prone to foliage diseases. If you water in the evening, the surface of the plant will stay moist through the night possibly promoting fungal growth. This is especially important if an overhead sprinkling system is used. If you have a drip irrigation system that waters the soil, not the plants, night watering is acceptable. As for how long to water? Generally an 8 x 12 foot secetion requires about 28 minutes with a soaker hoses.
